i'm only a semester behind...

one of my New Year's Resolutions: actually write on this blog.

KBruns of the Illinois Men's team has been doing an awesome job of keeping up their blog this year, and I've gotten requests from some of the girls to do the same. I'll work on it guys, I'll work on it.

Now for a (very) late update on the last semester:

ROOKIES. We've had an awesome recruiting season for rookies. The first few practices we had around 30-35 rookies come out, and we came out of the fall season with about 15 rookies. Keeping almost half of the girls who came out was awesome. I think we have all of the vets to thank for this with their constant encouragement and patience with teaching the newbies. As to the rookies who have joined us this year, we're so glad to have you all as a part of this team and I personally can say that I'm so proud of all the progress you've made. *tear* haha.

RESULTS. Club Sectionals went mostly as we expected, playing against Nemesis and Dish. We unfortunately didn't get to matchup against Spicy Tuna, which I know a lot of us were looking forward to. Everyone loves a good sibling rivalry [Fosters] and a chance to play against old teammates [j.wo, Kelly]. I think all of the vets had to step up big time in this tourney, being our first as a team with no seniors, and many people playing different roles than they did last year. I think this was a big eye-opener for us, realizing that we have a lot of adjusting and a lot of learning to do. We also got to play against our Asst. Coach, Fozz who plays for Nemesis, which was a blast.

Whitesmoke: Our first tourney with our huge, awesome rookie class, Whitesmoke was cold but very fun. We even let our rookies play a game all by themselves, so they all got a lot of playtime and experience. We kept a 5-2 or 4-3 rookies-to-vets ratio on the field most of the time, with vets handling and rookies cutting for the most part. We had some vets with little to no prior handling experience who really stepped up this tourney. I think it's really great to have everyone play on both sides of the disc, to get an idea of how it is to be in all positions on the field.

No Wisco:
This was our first regular tournament playing with our rookies. We split our rookies between No Wisco and Glory Days so everyone would get a good amount of playing time. No Wisco yielded some tough games where we occasionally got stuck in a rut, but we were still able to come out with a few wins. We had some times where we had to re-strategize and try some new things out, but it was all a very good learning experience for us. The mornings were cold but mid-day things got nicer. The weather was pretty nice for this one, overall. A big shoutout to Annalise's parents for barbeque-ing for us, that was awesome and delicious. This was also the first tourney that we were playing alongside our men, which was a treat to be able to walk over and watch them, as well as have them come talk on our sidelines too. No Wisco really got us pumped up and working together as a new team, just in time for Glory Days.

Glory Days:
This tourney had some gorgeous weather, some Chi Invite '09-esque weather, and some Rantoul-esque wind. So that was kindof all over the place and unpredictable, but Menace was definitely not. We went 5-2 in this tournament, our best record of 2010. The 2 games we lost were against St. Louis and Purdue X, and were by 3 points and 1 point, respectively. We pulled out a very exciting win versus our long time rivals Valpo, in a very fun but horribly wet, cold, and windy game. We always have a good time playing against them. Saturday yielded the bad weather, and then Sunday was unexpectedly warm and sunny albeit very windy. We stayed the weekend at Allie's house, which was gorgeous and really fun. Shoutout to Allie and her awesome parents for housing and feeding us that weekend! I think overall, we really clicked this tournament. Everyone was still getting used to their new roles but we're getting to a point where we can anticipate what our teammates will do. This gave a big boost to Menace and I really hope it's an indicator of how this spring will be.

Since then: We've been working on our conditioning since we've gone indoors, with sprint workouts and new drills, as well as working a lot on throwing and marking, along with a slew of other things. The rookies have made so much progress and the vets are continuing to fine tune their skillz and work together better.

Right now we're in the process of lining up our spring season and ordering jerseys, info on both are coming soon!

Can't wait for our first practice in Irwin!
